Mauser M1879 Reichsrevolver, 10.6 x 25mmR German Service Revolver
The M1879 Reichsrevolver was Imperial Germany's first cartridge revolver, and in fact the first officially issued side arm for officers. Until then, the German army thought of handguns as more of an accoutrement signifying officer rank. The M1879 is a significant advance in the development of German military arms and was produced by a number of manufacturers, both state-owned and private. This particular specimen was made in 1882 at the Mauser Werke in Oberndorf. It is in very good original condition, with matching serial numbers on all parts, including screw heads, escutcheons, barrel, frame and cylinder. The butt plate bears two sets of unit markings, the older one crossed out and new re-issue stamps on the opposite side. There are two letters "BE" carved into the right grip which are unit marks. The German 10.6 x 25mm rimmed cartridge is virtually identical to a .44 Russian, and the gun will chamber either cartridge.
The action is crisp and strong, with excellent, tight lock-up. The bore of the 7 1/4 inch barrel is excellent and bright, with sharp rifling. The gun is housed in a large pine case, together with a original WW I Iron Cross. The M1879 would be replaced in 1883 by a newer, slightly lighter version of the revolver, but continued to be used until the end of WW I. SN 2686.
Reloadable ammo is available but sold separately for $10 each.
