Smith "Smith's New Model", .32 Rim Fire Pocket Revolver, RARE Otis Smith obviously enjoyed some benefits from "name recognition", as his revolvers were sometimes associated with Smith & Wesson. His guns, were of decent quality comparable to S&W somehow. They were one brand of those made in the 1870's and 80's. ​ This one is very special, all-brass construction model. Brass frames sometimes were used for 19th century handguns, but very few were made with a brass barrel and frame. This one only has a steel cylinder, hammer, cylinder pin, trigger, screws and springs. The reasoning behind this was to prevent corrosion from black powder and environment , so the owner could carry it in environments which would make a conventional gun rust - such as aboard ships, the tropics, or out in the bush. It is in very good condition. The action works properly and the cylinder indexes and locks as it should. The bore of the 3 inch barrel shows visible rifling. The black hard rubber grips are very good and undamaged. SN40975, very good overall. History And Background Otis A. Smith was a prolific maker of small pocket revolvers from 1874 until the late1880’s. Born in 1836 to Scottish immigrants, Smith worked as a pistol maker for Ira Johnson until 1879. In 1881 Smith bought the property of Ira Johnson’s pistol factory in Rockfall, CT, which had burned to the ground two years earlier. Smith produced his own designs and patents under the Smith name as well as under US Revolver Co., US Arms Co., Maltby-Henley and others. For a while Smith was also a principal shareholder in the Norwich Falls Pistol Co. as well. By the late 1880’s, the market had been flooded with cheap pocket revolvers, and Smith changed his business model to concentrate on farming and gardening implements, and tools. One of the most prominent citizens of Rockfall, Smith built a magnificent mansion in the town, which is still as splendid today as it was then. Smith retired in the early 1920’s and passed away in 1924.
