They were also used as army and police dogs in Europe. They have a protective nature that makes them shine on the homestead. Don't let their teddy bear appearance fool you, they can and will protect your property as they are naturally territorial. Their double coat is non shedding but it does require regular grooming to prevent matting. The coat is high maintenance in the first few years but gradually tapers off as the dog reaches maturity at 3 years old. Briards can also make an excellent companion in town.
