British Pattern 1853 socket bayonet with leather scabbard This is a British M1853 Socket Bayonet for use with the Enfield, Snider, Martini rifles. This 1853 pattern was the standard bayonet carried by nearly every British infantryman of the mid-19th century and widely used during the Crimean War, Indian Mutiny, and in numerous colonial campaigns. Production of the1853 pattern socket bayonet continued throughout the life of the Enfield Muzzleloader and the Snider rifle and was finally terminated in 1875. The blade has a slight downward curve to allow easier reloading while fixed to the muzzle-loading Enfield rifle. Measuring 44 cm (17 inches), it features a triangular cross-section with fullers on all three sides, tapering to a narrow, down-turned point. The blade is in good solid condition but is badly tarnished. The scabbard is in fair condition. The bottom brass below the frog hook is pulled free from the leather scabbard. The brass tip on the scabbard wiggles a bit but is still solidly attached. The stitching on the scabbard in the last 3 ½” above the end cap is partially missing but the scabbard is solid and not separating. The scabbard is stamped W.D. (War Department) below the frog stud with the Broad Arrow symbol above the initials. This stamping is difficult to see. Easily accommodates 2 rifles ( see photos ) ...... a great metal gun case ( if somewhat heavy construction ) which I purchased to hunt overseas. It has not seen much use ( actually only  1 flight on a hunting trip to New Zealand  carrying both a Malcolm scoped 16 lb., 32" barreled Sharps long range and an a scoped 10 lb. mid range ) , as well as a dozen or so trips by car to various gun shows in North America, at which I used to display various select arms from my Sharps and Remington Rolling Block collection. The sturdily built case weighs about 17.8 lbs. by itself and measures 53 1/2 " x 13 1/4 " x 4 1/2" . I have tried my best to photograph and show the few dents on both sides of the case. These are now in the $600 plus price range for a new one.
