VKT (Valmet), or the State Rifle Factory became operational September 9, 1928. Since 1930 Valmet's factory rifle club was active as well, having their hand in the design of the Finnish Lion, together with Aimo Lahti, the chief designer. 2. The Finnish Lion has the longest manufacturing time of all Finnish guns, from 1930 to 1979. Models are: M30 (prototype), M31 mod I, mod IIa, IIb, IVb, IVc, M35, M45, M52, M55, M59, M62, M65, M70, M200002 (Finnish Lion Standard) and wild boar version. Heavier models were the Finnish Lion Match and Champion. Two lighter version were also made, Junior and Pikku Leijona (Little Lion). 3. Serial numbers start from #1 (1932), and end into # 14,358 (1979). 4. The bolt and trigger are said to have been ahead of their time. The lock time is fast. Also the barrels were accurate. Champion models should have a set trigger, which makes lock time longer, but reduces pull weight. 5. Winchester Lever Action Repeating Rifle, .38-40 WCF, mfg. 1890. This is a good honest original ‘73 fresh out of a very old local collection. Standard length 24" octagon barrel retains it’s original dovetailed blade front sight and adjustable buckhorn rear. The metal has a mottled dark gray patina overall with some traces of original bluing remaining within protected areas around the sideplates, trigger, and along the dust cover rail. Sharp edges with generally smooth surfaces throughout. Some very light surface oxidation spotting forming toward the muzzle. The stock retains about 40% factory varnish with the balance worn to a pleasing dark untouched patina. Tight wood-to-metal fit with moderate wear overall and a just really honest, unmolested appearance. There is some very minor chipping along the edges of the butt and a super tight old 1" hairline crack at the front left side of the forearm. Original hammer, trigger, lever & locking nut, loading gate, dust cover, buttplate with trapdoor compartment (cleaning rod absent), forend cap, and magazine tube & band. Screws appear to be original. Crystal clear original barrel address, caliber marking, model designation, and serial number "336159" on lower tang. Action is very smooth, crisp, and secure and functions perfectly. Rifling is worn and pitted at the very tip of the muzzle but otherwise the bore shows good rifling overall with moderate/heavy blackpowder frosting and pinprick pitting scattered throughout. A very solid original '73 Winchester with a great Western look..
