French Model 1874 T Back Sword Bayonet for use on the 11mm M1874 Gras rifle Manufactured at the French State Arms Plant of Tulle in August 1878 The Gras was the last of the French sword type bayonets and was manufactured from 1874 until about 1885. The Bayonet and Scabbard have matching Serial numbers 96363 The left side of the guard is engraved with what looks like half a written L and the numbers 96363.  The scabbard has the same mark and numbers on the left side. Above the number on the guard are 2 diamonds each with the letter B in them. The front of the guard just above the top of the blade has the letters L and P The pommel has the number 2 stamped inside at the base along with other stamps I have not identified. The top of the tang has what looks like a C6 stamped in it. The back of the blade is engraved with M d’Armes de Tulle Aout 1878   The Spring Lock works as designed.   Overall Length – with blade in scabbard  - 25 7/8” Length of Bayonet – 25 3/8” The blade has never been sharpened. Selling/trading an 1862 Enfield Snider rifle inn .577 Snider. These were modified rifles carried by the Metis as "Blanket Guns" during the Red River and Northwest Rebellions associated with Louis Riel. Based on the ornate decoration and configuration of the rifle, this would have been a period correct gun of that time. Barrel is a smoothbore. Wood stocks shows normal wear for its age but is in good solid shape. Steel has patina'd and shows well. Action has some play in it, hammer is cocked slightly to the left. A very unique piece. No PAL required, just proof of age. Would suggest having this gone over by a gunsmith prior to firing. Looking for $995 shipped. Insurance by request on buyer. Open to all trades.
