Colt M1889 "Navy" Double Action Revolver, .41 Long Colt, SCARCE 3-Inch Barrel​ This model is a marked departure from previous Colt revolver designs, and would be produced in a few variants from 1889 until 1907, with some 330,000 made. Many were sold to the US military. It has a counter-clockwise rotating cylinder with locking slots on the back. This one is in very fine condition with a scarce 3-inch barrel. It retains 100% of the nickel. Excellent, sharp markings, matching assembly numbers on all parts. Nice nitre-blue on the hammer and trigger. The action is crisp and strong, and the cylinder indexes and locks properly with no play on trigger pull. The bore is very fine and bright, with sharp rifling. The grips are very fine with no wear . SN 25842. History & Background This model is an important milestone in Colt handgun development, as it is the first American revolver with a swing-out cylinder mounted on a crane, a development which would become the standard for modern revolvers to this day. The 1889 cylinder mechanism was already "on the books" as early as 1880, based on designs of Colt engineers William Mason, C.J Ehbets and Horace Lord. It would take almost ten years for Colt executives to give the green light to manufacture this gun, and once it was available, the US government quickly took notice and ordered several thousand for the Navy. Colt adopted the name "New Navy" in honor of this order. The gun has an interesting counter-clockwise cylinder rotation and a locking mechanism which relies entirely on the two-pronged hand. The 1889 model would remain in production for 18 years. When it was first introduced in 1889, it met with no competition from the other major makers - Smith & Wesson were still heavily engaged in manufacturing top-break revolvers, and Remington only had their solid frame revolvers with removable cylinders to offer. It would take S&W another ten years before they had a viable alternative to Colt's design.

It is characterized by the button-type barrel release and ejector mounted between the barrels. It is chambered for the .32 rim fire cartridge. The gun is in excellent condition, with original blue intact and the case colors on the frame. The markings are sharp and clear. This is a unique variant with a floating, internal firing pin which rotates a quarter turn with each cocking of the hammer and these are rarely encountered. The 4 bores are good with strong rifling all the way. The black gutta percha grips are excellent and undamaged. SN 5822, excellent overall. Christian Sharps (1811-1874) was one of the best-known firearms designers and manufacturers of the 19th century. Although he never achieved the volumes of Colt, S&W and Remington, Christian Sharps was a major supplier of long arms to the Union during the civil war. His carbines are iconic among civil war collectors. Sharps sporting rifles were extremely popular at the time, and still fetch premium prices to this day. Christian Sharps had a rocky and sometimes acrimonious relationship with his managers and partners, and would leave the Hartford firm in 1853, returning to Philadelphia. There, he formed a new company in 1854, called C. Sharps & Co. He manufactured pepperboxes and single-shot pistols, while the Sharps Rifle Co. continued with long arms. In 1862, Christian Sharps formed "Sharps & Hankins", in partnership with William Hankins, who had sold his own plant to William Uhlinger. Sharps & Hankins would continue until 1866, producing their four-barrel pepperboxes, single shot pistols, and military grade long arms in competition with his former company in Hartford. Webley & Sons circa 1896 chambered in .476 Eley and .455 Webley, and sold by the famed John Rigby & Co. in London. Established in 1775, John Rigby & Co remains to this day a staple of the fine firearms market. Their role in this piece's history adds even further to collector value. These revolvers were very popular private purchases among sportsmen and higher ranking officers around the turn of the 20th century up through WW1 as reliable, accurate, and elegant handguns. With an impressive 6" barrel and mirror-bore rifling, this is a collector's or target shooter's dream. I can add a box of 50 factory new Fiocchi Heritage .455 Webley rounds with purchase of the revolver if you have a PAL. If you don't want these rounds, take $100 off asking price. As a pre-1898 antique, this can be owned and used without any registration or headaches. Visually this revolver retains most of its original shiny dark blue finish with scattered minor loss from 130 years living. The trigger, hammer, ejector, cylinder release mechanism, and hinge screw have a shiny silver "in the white" finish giving a proud and bold contrast. The original checkered square bottom hardwood grips are solid, showing some minor dings and a tiny chip on the right. Sharply stamped "WG Army Model" on the top strap with calibers ".455/.476" Webley and Eley, and the W&S winged bullet logo on the left of the frame. The barrel is hand etched with the retailer address "JOHN RIGBY & Co. 72 ST JAMES'S St LONDON S.W.". *Sold* Parting with my Colt 1878 revolver. She's single and double action, chambered in .476 Eley which is interchangeable with .455 Webley. These revolvers were most commonly chambered in .44-40 Winchester and dubbed the "Frontier Model", with the .476 chambering being very scarce. They were introduced in 1878 as a larger frame, larger caliber twist on the new Colt 1877 Thunderer/Lightning model, filling a niche most similar to the 1873 Single Action Army, but this time in double action as well. Selling to clear up some moolah for car repairs. Pre-1898 Canada legal antique. This revolver was made in 1885. It has the desirable Pall Mall one line address on the barrel reading "COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. DEPOT 14. PALL MALL LONDON" with most words still visible. This address is a rarity and was only put on guns intended for the European markets. Serials match 15xxx, with the last 3 digits stamped on the cylinder. The loading gate is a replacement. This gorgeous revolver has an extremely nice black finish with shiny nickeled highlights on the hammer, trigger, and hammer screw. The visual condition speaks for itself. A stunning piece sure to catch eyes, and assurance that the metal will remain protected. The rifling is still strong and defined, showing some scattered frosting. The grips appear original, and are sturdy with minor holster wear on the high points from time on the hip. The action is great. The internals are shiny in factory condition. The cylinder locks up airtight at firing position. I have never seen an 1878 or 1877 with tighter lockup. In the unique fashion of the 1878 model design, this revolver has no cylinder stop allowing slight backrotation when you disengage the action, but it still generally cycles. The loading gate is a bit wobbly, contributing to backrotation. The four-way, anti-tilt follower is paired with a durable USGI-spec, stainless-steel spring with a painted coil, which maintains the “gas gauge” capability from the “Window” magazine product line. The magazine body is clearly marked to show approximate round counts when inserted in a magazine well, and the paint-pen dot matrix allows for custom markings to be applied by the shooter. The TMAG’s low-profile floor plate also allows for compatibility with the full line of PMAG® AR/M4 GEN M3 floor-plate accessories. The TMAG is optimized for Colt-spec AR15/M4 platforms, but modified internal and external geometry also permits operation with a range of other weapons such as the WK180C, HK® 416/MR556A1/M27 IAR, FN® SCAR™ MK 16/16S, and others.
