Winchester Model 88 .308 Pre-‘64
Designed in 1955 and discontinued in 1973, just under 284,000 Model 88 rifles rolled off Winchester’s assembly lines with approximately half of them in the (then) newly introduced .308 calibre. This versatile caliber remains very popular today. When introduced the Winchester Model 88 was a radical departure from all other Winchester lever-actions with four major differences:
1. Forward-locking rotating bolt which flings the ejected casings to the right, allowing the low mounting of a scope.
2. The detachable box magazine, which fed more aerodynamic sharp-pointed bullets, unsafe in tubular magazines.
3. The solid-top receiver that allows conventional scope mounting. All Model 88s were drilled and tapped for scope mounts.
4. The one-piece stock (the greatest visual difference) allows for more consistent bedding and is considered conducive to accuracy.
When you handle a Model 88, you’ll be shouldering a strong, sound, and wonderfully fast operating rifle worthy of passing down to the next generation. Well over 50 years later this rifle remains the choice for thousands of shooters and hunters.
Here are some details about the rifle I have for sale:
• One owner.
• Pre-64 rifle however the original stock broke in the early 1970’s and was replaced with a post ’64 style stock.
• The original hard butt plate has been replaced with a modern recoil pad.
• Stock has been refinished (this year) and is in perfect condition.
• Magazine capacity: 4 cartridge clip.
• The front sight has been removed.
• There is a scope base on the rifle allowing for an easier scope mount.
• Metal bluing is still in very good condition with only minor wear.
There are currently 2 Model 88’s for sale on Town Post: a 1966 model is listed for $1200, and a pre 1964 (with original stock) at $1500.
My ask of $1000 is very reasonable and firm.
I live in the Calgary area and am willing to meet up for a hand-off. I will arrange for the required documentation, and the prospective buyer will need to have a valid PAL.
