Sara — 4-year-old Maremma LGD

Sara is a 4-year-old Maremma and an experienced working livestock guardian dog. She was born and raised in a flock of sheep and, until this year, worked exclusively with sheep.

Since we parted with our sheep flock, Sara has transitioned into more of a whole-farm guardian. We have goats and cattle, and she protects the farm from coyotes nightly—we have a very large coyote population here, so she knows her job well.

Sara has had two litters of puppies and is an excellent mother. She is also wonderful at training her puppies up and teaching them how to work.

At this point, I feel she may be best suited to protecting a farmyard and its livestock as a whole. She may very well transition back into living and roaming directly with sheep again too; I just can't say for certain since she hasn't been doing that this past year.

Sara is accustomed to working as part of a team. Her partner was recently stolen, so she is currently the one who stays back with the animals while the other dogs patrol.

She is friendly with people and loves children. She can get excited and try to jump up when greeting them, so she may need a reminder at first—but she knows the rules.

She's an easy keeper. She does well on raw, Inukshuk, or whatever feeding program works for your ranch. We use both here. She doesn't require anything fancy for shelter and genuinely enjoys the cold.

She's a good girl, and we'd really like to see her go somewhere her experience can continue to be put to good use.
