Winchester Model 65 lever-action rifle chambered in .25-20 Winchester (W.C.F.).

This is a relatively short-lived model (produced roughly 1933–1947) with a total production of only about 5,700 rifles across all calibers. The .25-20 version is the rarest of the three main chamberings (.218 Bee was most common, followed by .32-20, with .25-20 being the scarcest). This serial number 1006977 places it in the later part of production, likely around 1938–1940 (late pre-war era).

The Model 65 is essentially an improved and more refined version of the earlier Winchester Model 1892/53 platform, with a streamlined receiver, better sights, and smoother action. It was marketed as a higher-grade sporting rifle.

Condition Assessment (Based on Your Photos)

•  Metal finish: The receiver and barrel show a dark, aged patina with some wear, spotting, and loss of original blue — typical for an 85+ year-old rifle that has seen use but not abuse.

•  Wood: The walnut stock and forearm have a warm, honest patina with visible scratches, dings, and handling marks, but no major cracks however, does have a small chip out of the fore stock & grip area, no breaks, or refinishing visible. The finish looks original.

•  Overall: It appears to be in Good condition (roughly 20–30% original finish depending on exact grading standards like Blue Book or NRA). It is a solid shooter-grade example with honest wear, not a safe queen or restored piece. No obvious signs of refinishing, rebarreling, or major alterations.

With a little bit of work, this could really be brought up to nice condition. At this price, you can’t go wrong. The bore does not have any rusting or pitting and still has lands and grooves.
