When the civil war broke out President Abraham Lincoln asked his friend Louis Kurz to visite the scenes of action and create a record of the fighthing. The lithograh is Kurzs interpretation of the battle. Battle of Nashville, fought on December 15-16, 1864, was a decisive Union victory that effectively ended Confederate General John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee as an effective fighting force. Union forces, led by Major
General George H. Thomas, launched a massive assault that shattered Hood's army, which was significantly outnumbered.
