They were also used as army and police dogs in Europe. They have a protective nature that makes them shine on the homestead. Don't let their teddy bear appearance fool you, they can and will protect your property as they are naturally territorial. Their double coat is non shedding but it does require regular grooming to prevent matting. The coat is high maintenance in the first few years but gradually tapers off as the dog reaches maturity at 3 years old. Briards can also make an excellent companion in town. They form a very tight bond with their family and will shine as a housedog when their exercise and socialization requirements are met. Need to rehome my 3 year old bluenose. We moved off an acreage into town and she is not adjusting. She is a great dog.. loves people and kids. She does get “protective” if people start getting rowdy. She doesn’t do well with many other dogs she needs to be introduced properly and gradually but would be best on an acreage with no other animals.
