French Model 1874 T Back Sword Bayonet for use on the 11mm M1874 Gras rifle Manufactured at the French State Arms Plant of Tulle in August 1878 The Gras was the last of the French sword type bayonets and was manufactured from 1874 until about 1885. The Bayonet and Scabbard have matching Serial numbers 96363 The left side of the guard is engraved with what looks like half a written L and the numbers 96363.  The scabbard has the same mark and numbers on the left side. Above the number on the guard are 2 diamonds each with the letter B in them. The front of the guard just above the top of the blade has the letters L and P The pommel has the number 2 stamped inside at the base along with other stamps I have not identified. The top of the tang has what looks like a C6 stamped in it. The back of the blade is engraved with M d’Armes de Tulle Aout 1878   The Spring Lock works as designed.   Overall Length – with blade in scabbard  - 25 7/8” Length of Bayonet – 25 3/8” The blade has never been sharpened. Easily accommodates 2 rifles ( see photos ) ...... a great metal gun case ( if somewhat heavy construction ) which I purchased to hunt overseas. It has not seen much use ( actually only  1 flight on a hunting trip to New Zealand  carrying both a Malcolm scoped 16 lb., 32" barreled Sharps long range and an a scoped 10 lb. mid range ) , as well as a dozen or so trips by car to various gun shows in North America, at which I used to display various select arms from my Sharps and Remington Rolling Block collection. The sturdily built case weighs about 17.8 lbs. by itself and measures 53 1/2 " x 13 1/4 " x 4 1/2" . I have tried my best to photograph and show the few dents on both sides of the case. These are now in the $600 plus price range for a new one. YES, both keys still come with it!   I am willing to ship at buyer’s expense, or offer local pick up --- I am also in Red Deer one day per week and can arrange to meet there, or enroute, for delivery.
