This is conversion to 45ACP /45 Auto also compatible with .455 Webley As well as original 11mm ammo. This one is in excellent original condition. it is "in the white", meaning it has never been blued or plated. It is not pitted, and all the markings are sharp and complete. The serial numbers - or parts rof - are repeated on all components: the barrel, cylinder, frame, grips, internal mechanism parts and even the screw heads and escutcheons. Everything matches. The bore of the 4 1/2 inch barrel is as perfect and it is mirror bright and the rifling is sharp. The barrel is newer replacement dated 1917. The action is excellent and accurate, and the cylinder indexes and locks without any play. The walnut grips are excellent and show no wear or damage this one looks like new. The four types, No. 1 through 4, are all similar in their use of a two-part frame which is joined just above the grip. This one is the No. 4, which resembles the popular "Bulldogs" of the day. It is in excellent condition with original nickel . The action is strong and accurate, and the cylinder indexes and locks properly with no play. The bore of the 2 1/2 inch barrel is excellent and bright, with sharp rifling. The black hard-rubber grips are very fine and undamaged. SN 21108, excellent overall.​​ History & Background Like Colt, Remington had to get into the cartridge pocket revolver market by sheer public pressure. They, too, like Colt, experienced difficulties trying to compete with the cheap "suicide specials" which were available at that same time. Although sales were brisk at first, and the guns enjoyed great popularity due to their excellent quality, in the long run the public opted for cheap over quality, and by the mid 1880's production of the smaller models was halted. The Smoot patent refers to the spring-loaded cylinder pin / extractor found on the New Model No. 1, 2 and 3. Remington was well known to acquire the patents of other designers and incorporating them into their own line of products, and into the name of the models. Inventors such as Beals, Elliot, Rider and Smoot all contributed to the success of Remington handguns.

Founded in 1868 by the principals Charles Converse, Charles and Samuel Hopkins, and Charles Allen, the firm assumed the assets of the Bacon Manufacturing Company. H&A used Bacon's machinery and inventory of parts, and continued at first to make Bacon's various models before switching to cartridge revolvers and later rifles and shot guns. H&A was in business until 1915, and claimed to be the "largest manufacturers of high-grade, popular priced firearms in the world".
