Canadian Pacific Coast Militia Rangers (PCMR) fighting knife from World War II. The PCMR was a home guard/militia unit formed in early 1942 specifically to defend British Columbia’s west coast against a potential Japanese invasion after Pearl Harbor. They were part of Canada’s Reserve Army, composed mostly of older men, hunters, outdoorsmen, and locals familiar with the rugged terrain. They patrolled remote areas, watched for enemy activity, and were trained in guerrilla tactics, demolitions, and small arms. PCMR knives were often improvised or field-modified from available surplus parts due to equipment shortages for these volunteer units. A common (and well-documented) type was conversions of old Ross rifle bayonets (Canadian WWI-era .303 Ross bayonets, which were plentiful and obsolete by WWII). These were cut down, reshaped into a broad fighting/utility blade (clip point, single-edged with some curve), fitted with a simple wooden handle (often riveted or pinned), and given a metal guard/crossguard.   A broad, darkened carbon steel blade with patina/wear typical of field use or age. •  Wooden handle secured by pins/rivets. •  Metal bolster/guard with markings but this is likely misread or a coincidental stamp; PCMR examples sometimes have odd or repurposed markings from surplus parts. German Third Reich-era SA (Sturmabteilung) service dagger, also known as the Model 1933 SA dress dagger. The SA was the Nazi Party’s paramilitary “Brownshirts” organization. This ceremonial dagger (not a combat weapon) features: •  a wooden grip with an inlaid nickel-silver SA rune button and eagle emblem •  nickel fittings •  a double-edged blade etched with the motto “Alles für Deutschland” (“All for Germany”) •  a brown scabbard The design draws from 16th-century Swiss Holbein daggers. Your example has a brown-painted scabbard (common on later wartime production), solid nickel or plated fittings, and a wooden grip—typical for SA daggers (NSKK versions are identical except for black scabbards after 1936). The blade shows a faint marking near the ricasso (possibly a maker logo or RZM code), light runner marks, and some wear/patina, indicating age and use. No visible Gau mark (regional stamp) on the lower crossguard suggests it may be mid-to-late production (post-1935, when such marks were phased out). The handle that is fixed to the knife is reproduction, but it does come with the original handle which is shown in the last picture. The arrival of the main body of Indians in the early summer was one of the important events of the year at the posts along the shores of Hudson Bay. Andrew Graham, who was at York Factory for several years, has left us an eye-witness account of the elaborate ceremony that preceded the trading at York when the Indian canoe fleet arrived from the West. After they had landed at the fort and had been duly received by the governor (as the local officer in charge was known), the chief and his lieutenant were dressed up in European clothes and then escorted to the chief's lodge with much pageantry. "In front are the halberts and ensigns," writes Graham, "next to the drummer beating a march; then several of the Factory Servants bearing the bread, and prunes, pipes, brandy, tobacco, and the beaver coats of the chief, which he had on when admitted into the Factory. Then comes the Captain [chief] walking quite erect and stately, smoaking his pipe and conversing with the Governor and his officers; then follow the Lieutenant and perhaps a friend or two who was permitted to come in with the Chief." In the picture, the chief, attired in scarlet, with one red stocking and one blue, is seen walking with the governor in all his finery. The Beavertail stock is widely different from the traditional European hunting stock.
