It is very interesting example of rarely blued 1873 French Service Revolver that was imported to United Kingdom and converted to .455 Webley caliber which was readily available in England of that time and was considerably more powerful than original 11mm ammo. This one is in excellent original condition, all the markings are sharp and complete. The serial numbers are repeated on all components: the barrel, cylinder, frame, grips, internal mechanism parts and even the screw heads and escutcheons. Everything matches. The bore of the 4 1/2 inch barrel is as perfect and it is mirror bright and the rifling is sharp. The action is excellent and accurate and very smooth, the cylinder indexes and locks properly with no play at all. The walnut grips are excellent and show no damage this one looks like new. The this one was checked and tested for smokeless powder by gunsmith. This one was professionally modified to accept 45auto rim and .45ACP cartridges on a moon clip and also can be used with original .455 Webley ammo. The gun is in like new condition with everything tight and working like a Swiss clock and plenty of the original blue remaining. The action is accurate strong and very smooth. The cylinder indexes and locks properly without play. The bore of the 4-inch barrel is good and mirror bright, with sharp rifling. The grips are excellent and undamaged. SN 30929, very fine overall. History & Background Philip Webley & Son began making top break, hinged revolvers as early as 1880, with the Charles Pryse patented design they acquired for use on their Webley-Pryse revolvers. Soon thereafter an improved locking mechanism by Michael Kaufmann produced the Webley-Kaufmann design, followed by Webley's own improved "Government" model, or "WG". It was not until 1887, when the British military hoped to replace the Enfield revolver that the first "Mark" revolver model was introduced. The Mk I was soon followed by the MkII (1894), then III (1897), and eventually as many as six variations were made, between 1887 and 1949. The Webley top break "Mark" revolvers were probably the single most widely used side arm in the world, and were still in service as late as the 1970’s.

The rifling lands in front of the chamber had separated from barrel for about 1.25" and 1 land was protruding into bore. Cut off 2" of barrel chamber end. Machined new barrel end to fit receiver tighter by .002" and rechambered for 22 short only. At range gun shot 1/4" - 5 shot group at 50 yds. shooting CCI 22 short - 27 gr. HP. Seems the rifling is not shot out but can not understand rifling land separation. UNIQUE -- NO WARRANTY or REFUND from LILJA. Call phone or e-mail only. No messages. Webley & Sons circa 1896 chambered in .476 Eley and .455 Webley, and sold by the famed John Rigby & Co. in London. Established in 1775, John Rigby & Co remains to this day a staple of the fine firearms market. Their role in this piece's history adds even further to collector value. These revolvers were very popular private purchases among sportsmen and higher ranking officers around the turn of the 20th century up through WW1 as reliable, accurate, and elegant handguns. With an impressive 6" barrel and mirror-bore rifling, this is a collector's or target shooter's dream. I can add a box of 50 factory new Fiocchi Heritage .455 Webley rounds with purchase of the revolver if you have a PAL. If you don't want these rounds, take $100 off asking price. As a pre-1898 antique, this can be owned and used without any registration or headaches. Visually this revolver retains most of its original shiny dark blue finish with scattered minor loss from 130 years living. The trigger, hammer, ejector, cylinder release mechanism, and hinge screw have a shiny silver "in the white" finish giving a proud and bold contrast. The original checkered square bottom hardwood grips are solid, showing some minor dings and a tiny chip on the right. Sharply stamped "WG Army Model" on the top strap with calibers ".455/.476" Webley and Eley, and the W&S winged bullet logo on the left of the frame. The barrel is hand etched with the retailer address "JOHN RIGBY & Co. 72 ST JAMES'S St LONDON S.W.". The serial 13XXX places manufacture in the mid-late 1890s and makes this one of the most modern antiques you can get. The bore retains shiny, strong rifling with scarce patches of wear. The action functions excellent in single and double action, leaving nothing to be desired. The cylinder indexes and locks up with almost no wiggle for reliable firing and the timing is excellent. *Sold* Parting with my Colt 1878 revolver. She's single and double action, chambered in .476 Eley which is interchangeable with .455 Webley. These revolvers were most commonly chambered in .44-40 Winchester and dubbed the "Frontier Model", with the .476 chambering being very scarce. They were introduced in 1878 as a larger frame, larger caliber twist on the new Colt 1877 Thunderer/Lightning model, filling a niche most similar to the 1873 Single Action Army, but this time in double action as well. Selling to clear up some moolah for car repairs. Pre-1898 Canada legal antique. This revolver was made in 1885. It has the desirable Pall Mall one line address on the barrel reading "COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. DEPOT 14. PALL MALL LONDON" with most words still visible. This address is a rarity and was only put on guns intended for the European markets. Serials match 15xxx, with the last 3 digits stamped on the cylinder. The loading gate is a replacement. This gorgeous revolver has an extremely nice black finish with shiny nickeled highlights on the hammer, trigger, and hammer screw. The visual condition speaks for itself. A stunning piece sure to catch eyes, and assurance that the metal will remain protected. The rifling is still strong and defined, showing some scattered frosting. The grips appear original, and are sturdy with minor holster wear on the high points from time on the hip. The action is great. The internals are shiny in factory condition. The cylinder locks up airtight at firing position. I have never seen an 1878 or 1877 with tighter lockup. In the unique fashion of the 1878 model design, this revolver has no cylinder stop allowing slight backrotation when you disengage the action, but it still generally cycles. The loading gate is a bit wobbly, contributing to backrotation. All Swedish Mausers other than trials rifles were chambered for the 6.5×55mm Swedish cartridge, and all Swedish-made actions were proof-tested with a single 6.5×55mm proof round developing approximately 455 MPa (65,992 psi) piezo pressure (55,000 CUP).[4][5] Swedish Mausers were manufactured by Waffenfabrik Mauser AG in Oberndorf a/N in Germany and in Sweden by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori and Husqvarna Vapenfabriks Aktiebolag. All Swedish Mausers, whether built in Germany or Sweden, were fabricated using a Swedish-supplied high grade tool steel alloyed with nickel, copper, and vanadium, a product then noted for its strength and corrosion resistance. These rifles, like other pre-M 98 system Mauser rifles, lack the third safety locking lug at the rear of the bolt and feature "cock-on-closing" (similar to the contemporary Lee–Enfield rifle). CFP/RCMP courtesy of Bill C-71 require any firearm to have a transfer registration number approved by the CFT to sell, give or transfer as of MAY 18, 2022.
