Colt M1878 "Frontier" Double Action Revolver, .45 Colt / .45 Rev, Factory Letter.
The model of 1878 was Colt's second double action revolver, and it was a substantial improvement over the previous model of 1877. It is a heavier gun, like a SAA crossed with a Thunderer. It is a sturdy, well-made piece which enjoyed great popularity across the globe. According to the included factory letter, this one was retailed from Colt's London Depot at Pall Mall in March of 1879, and is chambered for the .45 Boxer cartridge - which is almost identical to the .45 Colt. It is in very fine condition, with the blue intact. The markings are sharp and complete. The action is accurate and crisp, with a properly indexing and locking cylinder. The bore of the 5 1/2 inch barrel is excellent and bright, with sharp rifling. The grips are excellent and undamaged, showing no wear. SN 2111.
History & Background
Colt introduced the 1878 Frontier as a companion of sorts to the SAA, the most popular of Colt’s Western frontier side arms known as the “Frontier Six-Shooter” in its 44-40 configuration. The DA Frontier is a big gun, requiring a big hand to hold it steady and fire with speed and accuracy. More than 51,000 M1878’s were made between 1878 and 1905, and they were available in a variety of combination handgun and rifle calibers such as 32-20, 38-40 and .44-40. Odd calibers such as .44 Russian and .455 Eley are rare, and much sought after by collectors.
