Iver Johnson "American Bulldog", .44 Webley / Russian Revolver, 2 1/4 inch Barrel
Rather scarce. The "American Bulldog" is one of those American-made Bulldog-types which are chambered for the 44 Webley and .44 Russian cartridges at the same time. Because in the 1880's Webley cartridges were not always available, especially out West. For this reason makers who offered a combination caliber could probably count on better sales.
This one is in excellent condition, with original nickel and excellent, undamaged hard rubber grips. The action is tight and accurate, and the cylinder indexes and locks properly. The bore of the 2 1/4 inch barrel is mirror bright and excellent, with sharp rifling and no pitting . The checkering and the dog head logo on the grips are excellent. SN 5145, rated excellent overall.
30mm cylinder length .
History And Background
Iver Johnson (1841-1895) was a Norwegian gunsmith who came from Bergen to America in 1863. He found work immediately at Ethan Allen's factory in Worcester, Mass. where he met Martin Bye. Johnson worked at Allen's through the civil war years, as demand for firearms was high, and work was plentiful. By 1871 Johnson and Bye had decided to venture out on their own and founded Johnson Bye & Co. in Worcester, moving to Fitchburg by 1891. In 1883 Martin Bye left the company, selling his interest to Iver. The company name was changed to its most famous form, "Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works, Fitchburg, Mass.", a name it would retain until the outbreak of the First World War. Iver Johnson did not only produce a large variety of firearms, they were also famous for their excellent quality bicycles and motorcycles. The company would remain in business until 1993. The name was "revived" in 2006 and the brand is still used today.
