Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 Revolver is very solid revolver and has heavier more durable frame and improved grip shape and can be used for fast cowboy style shooting.
The New Model No. 3 was originally only available with a 6 1/2 inch barrel, but soon the requests for other lengths came in, and eventually "standard" sizes were 4, 6 1/2, and 8 inches although the 4 and 8 inch are very rare. This is very hard to find single-action revolver with a 4-inch barrel. It is in perfect condition with 100% blue. The action is accurate, and the cylinder indexes and locks properly without play. The hinge is tight and the ejector works as it should. The bore is very good and bright, with strong rifling. The black plastic grips are excellent and undamaged, showing no wear. Matching numbers on the barrel, frame, cylinder and latch. SN 24039, excellent overall.

History & Background
The New Model No. 3 was introduced in 1878. Daniel B. Wesson believed in perfection of his designs, and after having had the opportunity to evaluate the various predecessors of the New Model - the "Americans", the "Russians" and the "Schofields", Daniel decided that the single action top break revolver could still be improved upon. As the Russian contracts were drawing to a close, Wesson, together with his chief engineer J.H. Bullard, redesigned the gun to reflect the most up-to-date findings of their research: the grip shape was changed to make it more "ergonomic", the ejector mechanism was simplified to shorten the housing, the cylinder retainer was improved, the hammer was made to rebound after striking the primer, and the strain screw was replaced from the previous type. The result was the most successful - and longest production period - single action revolver in the firm's history. It proved to be very popular with governments around the world, including Turkey and especially Japan (which bought approximately 1/3 of total production). During its 34 year production period, the New Model No. 3 was produced in barrel lengths from 3 1/2 to 8 inches, and in as many as 14 different calibers.
