1863 C D Schubarth marked Antique Percussion Smoothbore Musket. Following the Civil war thousands of Civil War muskets and parts were available to private companies who built rifles and Fowler's for civilians to use for hunting. This one was built with an 1863 Schubarth civil war contract lock and barrel. 32” Barrel Overall Length 47 ½” Inside bore diameter is approximately .820”. The Lockplate is marked below the bolster with “U.S. C.D. Schubarth, Providence”. A spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on the lockplate between the hammer and the bolster. The number “1863” is marked at the rear of the lockplate behind the hammer. Matching “1863” barrel date stamp is on the breech top flat. The number “49” is marked on the left side of the barrel band. All screw heads are good with no significant wear. Government proof marks “V / P / [eagle head]” on left facet of the breech are light but relatively clear. It retains the tulip-head steel ramrod used in the 1863 Rifles which has been cut in length to match the 32” barrel. The stock is in good solid condition with numerous usage marks. 1 small crack is visible behind the lockplate (approx 3/4” long) but it is solid and does not require repairs. The butt plate, trigger guard and barrel band are steel. No rear site. Bead front site. The action works as designed. I have rubbed a graphite pencil tip over the markings to have them show up better in the pictures. $900.00 or Best Offer Thanks, Phil
