This is the seven-shot, 32 S&W long/.32 MH caliber "medium frame" model in double action. The length of the cylinder differentiates it as a .32 Merwin caliber. It is in excellent condition, with 99% bright nickel and no flaking. The action and locking mechanism are excellent and tight, and the cylinder indexes and locks properly both in single and double action with no play. The bore of the 3 1/2 inch barrel is excellent and bright, with sharp rifling . Original grips are excellent and undamaged, with vibrant color. The serial numbers match on the frame, cylinder, and barrel. SN 18369, excellent overall.

All Merwin, Hulbert & Co. revolvers were actually manufactured by Hopkins & Allen of Norwich, CT, although they may be marked with a New York address. Joseph Merwin opened his gun store in New York City in 1859, with a few partners over the years - Merwin & Bray, Merwin & Simkins, then Merwin, Taylor & Simkins, and eventually Merwin & Hulbert. When Hulbert's half-brother joined the firm in 1872, the name became Merwin, Hulbert & Co. MH&Co were retailers only, and never manufactured or designed any of the guns bearing their name. Joseph Merwin had a 50% interest in Hopkins & Allen, and a seat on the board of directors, and for that reason it would have been logical to use the established manufacturing company to produce this line of guns. The design of them is unmistakable - the mechanism used to open the cylinder, load and unload cartridges, as well as the use of a folding hammer spur is all unique to the Merwin's. The guns are of excellent quality, probably the best Hopkins & Allen ever produced.
